Free Spirits - September 2022

September is a month where we get to enjoy the best of summer and the best of fall, from boat trips and pool parties for Labor Day weekend, to trips to apple orchards and pumpkin patches at the end of the month. One of our favorite September traditions is the return of football, and more importantly, the return of tailgating! Nothing beats gathering with friends outdoors to eat, drink, and celebrate. This month we provide some recipes and ideas to make this season’s tailgate parties your best yet!

This Maumee Moonshine fueled cocktail is easy to make and even easier to drink. They can be prepared individually in 12oz bottles, or you can batch it in resealable 2 liter bottles for the ultimate tailgate cocktail!

Our Bellwether beverage team’s version calls for Coca-Cola in glass bottles, otherwise known as “Mexican Coke”. It is made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup and is generally regarded as the best version of Coke. The Moonrunner can be made with any cola of your choice though, and can be changed to accomodate any size bottle, from a single serving bottle of Coke, to a 2 liter bottle.

  • 12 oz. bottle of Mexican Coke

  • 1 oz Maumee Moonshine

  • .5 oz St. Elizabeth’s Allspice Dram

  • .5 oz lime juice

Pour out 2 oz of Coke from bottle to make room for the other ingredients. Add Moonshine, Allspice Dram, and lime juice to bottle. Using your thumb as a stopper, flip the bottle upside down to “mix” the ingredients.

Football season is upon us, and with it, the return of tailgating! Whether you’re drinking out of a bowling ball with the Bills Mafia, taking part in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, or grilling out at the Big House, the Shoe, or the Glass Bowl this season, be sure to include some Heart of Glass Lemonade flasks in your cooler along with your batch of Moonrunners!

The unofficial end of summer means a great opportunity to enjoy some of the summer’s best cocktails. Whip up a batch of your favorite summer drink or get fancy and try one of these summer shaken cocktails.

  • Sept. 20 - Rum Punch Day
Rum Punch is one of our favorite cocktails. There are tons of different ways to make it using a variety of rums, juices, and other liqueurs (like the Allspice Dram used in this month’s featured cocktail, the Moonrunner). One of our beverage team’s favorite versions is this Planter’s Punch recipe.

1 ½ oz King & Dane Silver Rum

    1 oz Orange Juice

    1 oz Pineapple Juice

    ½ oz Lime Juice

    ½ oz Orgeat

  • Sept. 28 - Drink Beer Day
This is a pretty self explanatory holiday to celebrate. We’re confident that you know HOW to drink beer, but if you need some inspiration on WHERE to drink beer, we suggest a visit to HEAVY Underground, HEAVY Beer Company’s taproom located in the basement of Toledo Spirits.

  • Sept. 29 - Coffee Day
Our passion for coffee isn’t limited to the morning cup(s) that fuel our day, it’s also the inspiration for our King & Dane Coffee Liqueur! The expertly blended combination of cold brew coffee, house-made silver rum, and cane sugar is perfect for White Russians, Espresso Martinis, and Tiramisu. Celebrate Coffee Day with your favorite coffee drink in the morning and your favorite coffee cocktail at night!
