A Whiskey Sour with Fall Flavor

Low-Town Twist

Fall in Toledo has a way of sneaking up on me. One day I am enjoying spritzes on the porch, and the next there is a chill in the air, the trees in the Old West End are glowing gold, and I am layering up while reaching for a cocktail with a little more warmth.

Yes, that means bourbon season (fine, it is always boubon season). And, of course, that means Lowertown Apple Bourbon, Toledo Spirits' ode to Ohio orchards and the neighborhood that inspired it. This is bourbon that has a story, a little bit of sweetness, and a whole lot of character.

To get a jump on the season, we decided to create a new fall cocktail that celebrates everything we love about this time of year. I call it The Low-town Twist.

The Low-town Twist is our Toledo spin on a classic Whiskey Sour, reimagined with seasonal ingredients that hit all the right fall notes. It is bright, tart, a little sweet, and beautifully balanced.

Here is what you will need to make one at home:

  • 2 oz Lowertown Apple Bourbon, for rich Lowertown Bourbon tones and apple brightness

  • 1 oz fresh-squeezed orange juice (for juicy citrus lift)

  • 1.5 oz unsweetened cranberry juice (adds sharp, autumnal tang)

  • 1 oz simple syrup (just enough sweet to balance)

  • Garnish: an orange twist (you could also use a few fresh cranberries but they will not provide any character, only visual appeal)

Shake with ice until well-chilled, strain into a rocks glass with large ice, and finish with the twist.

Why does this mix work so well? As always, it is all about the balance. Lowertown Apple Bourbon brings a subtle apple note that plays perfectly with the tang of cranberry juice and the brightness of orange. The result is cozy, crisp, and just a little playful.

It is the kind of cocktail you can batch for friends or pour for some quiet porch time...maybe as a reward after that Fall hike?

You will not find the Low-town Twist on the menu at Bellwether (although I am sure we could mix one up for you on demand), but of course, you can always grab a bottle of Lowertown Apple Bourbon from our Bottleshop or your favorite liquor store to mix up at home.

Whether you are a die-hard bourbon drinker or just playing at being bourbon-curious, this cocktail is approachable and delicious. And a great way to get yourself into a Whiskey Sour frame of mind. What variations can you come up with?

So, here is to fall! Cheers to the season of bonfires and cocktails that remind you why it is good to be home. And raking leaves. Do not forget about raking the leaves.
